NYU Langone’s Hospital for Joint Diseases

Introduction to Orthopaedic Surgery at NYU Langone’s Hospital for Joint Diseases

When NYU Langone Medical Center and the Hospital for Joint Diseases joined forces, an orthopaedic practice with more 240 years of combined experience was created. Our faculty includes world-renowned surgeons working at five locations in the New York City area to treat a wide variety of orthopaedic and rheumatologic conditions that includes a comprehensive array of subspecialties spanning trauma and fractures, adult reconstruction, spine, sports medicine, hand service, musculoskeletal oncology, foot and ankle care, shoulder and elbow service, and pediatric orthopaedics.

After formal sponsorship between the two institutions was established in 1994, the eventual merger of the orthopaedic resources of these two centers perhaps seemed inevitable – and certainly desirable, in terms of being able to provide the best possible musculoskeletal healthcare to the Greater New York Metropolitan Area.

The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at NYU Langone’s Hospital for Joint Diseases has few parallels in the American healthcare system and with the appointment as Chairman of Joseph D. Zuckerman MD, Walter A. L. Thompson Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery, the Department has undergone significant changes in several areas while continuing to maintain essential continuity with the history of each of the two great institutions it represents.
